Synopsis
Dr Nina Crawford of the University of Glasgow's Veterinary College - driven, fanatically dedicated, a survivor - is one of the most respected equine surgeons in the country. But now she seems to be losing her grip, on her operating theatre, on her skills - and on her mind. A surgeon's worst nightmare is coming true before her eyes: "The operation was a great success, but the patient died." All of her cases are dying after routine surgery and she has no idea why, or how, or what to do to stop it. Under the fierce scrutiny of those around her, Nina feels herself spiralling into the depths that led her, years before, to attempt suicide. Kellen Stewart is Nina's therapist - and also her friend. Now her own horse needs emergency surgery and Nina is the only one who can do it. As the boundaries blur between friendship and professional relationship, it becomes clear that it's not only the horses' lives that are on the line.

Reviews
An 'Equus' for the late 1990s… a chilling thriller intensely written and with a growing sense of powerlessness. Not a reasonable book, but one that will doubtless induce nightmares. ...The Big Issue

…the denouement is nail-biting. Scott's second book heralds the Patricia Cornwell of the animal world, scalpel firmly in hand. ...Frances Fyfield, Mail on Sunday

With a keen eye for detail in the surgery room and the minutiae of human relationships, as well as a fine ability to create the essential tension, … becoming a stand-out in the increasingly busy field of Scottish crime writing. ...The List

It is the symbiotic relationship and enduring trust between the two women which makes Night Mares such a success. Its pace would suggest a thriller, but it is more than that. Scott's quizzical probing into the quandary of the over-seer; the carer, is brilliant. Don't miss this one. ...The Big Issue.

Scott's writing bears resemblance to Mary Renault. Like Renault in her early fiction, Scott describes hospital worlds which ache with sexual and psychic tension. Both novelists explore an unconventional and demanding idea of female heroism and both write about characters who are objects of desire to both sexes. Horses, death and sex create almost as potent a cocktail as the one Nina slips into her veins. ...Helen Dunmore
